Not every moment needs the same detail
A tractor idling far from its next stop doesn't need to report as often as one arriving at a property where a precise geofence crossing decides whether a visit is marked complete. So Snowmass varies how often it sends a GPS ping based on the situation.
How it adapts
The ping rate steps between roughly 1, 2, and 5 seconds, driven mainly by distance:
- Close to a stop — fastest rate, so arrivals and geofence crossings register crisply.
- In between — a moderate rate.
- Far away or in transit — the slowest rate, since fine detail isn't needed there.
Why it matters
- Battery — a tablet in the cab for a 12-hour shift lasts longer when it isn't transmitting flat-out the whole time.
- Data — fewer pings where they don't add value means less mobile data used.
- Accuracy where it counts — the fast rate kicks in exactly where precise position drives a decision, like completing a service visit.
Nothing to configure
This is automatic. Operators don't set a rate and dispatchers don't tune it per vehicle — the app reads the situation and adjusts. Combined with offline buffering, it means the tablet spends its battery and data where they actually help the storm.
