Installing the operator tablet app

Add Snowmass to a tablet's home screen so it opens like a native app.

Tablet app & offline Updated 2026-08-09

A real app, no app store

The operator side of Snowmass is a Progressive Web App (PWA). That means you install it straight from the browser — no app store, no download, no waiting for updates to approve. It opens full-screen from the home screen and behaves like a native app in the cab.

Installing it

  1. Open Snowmass in the tablet's browser and sign in.
  2. Use the browser's Add to Home Screen option (in the menu or the address bar).
  3. Confirm. A Snowmass icon appears on the home screen.
  4. Launch from that icon — it opens full-screen, without browser chrome.

The exact wording varies by tablet, but the idea is the same on every device.

Why install rather than bookmark

  • App shell cached — the interface loads even when the connection is weak, because its shell is stored on the device.
  • Full-screen — no address bar eating space you need for the map and stop list.
  • Faster launch — it's right there on the home screen for the operator starting a shift.

Keeping it current

Because it's a web app, updates arrive automatically — there's nothing to reinstall. Next time the tablet has a connection, it picks up the latest version on its own.

Once installed, you're ready to work through dead zones — see How offline mode works.
