De-icing material is a strange line item. It is one of your largest variable costs, it is an environmental liability if you over-apply, and it is one of your best legal defenses if you log it correctly. The same bag of salt can be a cost problem, a compliance problem, or a protection — and which one it becomes depends almost entirely on whether you have a per-property, timestamped record of where it went.

Why "we salted the route" is not a record

Plenty of operations track material at the wrong altitude. They know how many tonnes left the yard. They might know which route it went on. But when a claim comes in — someone slipped on a specific walk at a specific property at a specific time — "we salted that route that night" is not evidence. It cannot answer the question that matters: was this property treated, when, and with how much?

A record is only worth keeping if it is granular enough to defend a single property on a single night. That means the unit of tracking has to be the property and the moment, not the route and the shift.

The only reliable material record is one captured where and when the material is applied — on the property, at the moment, by the person applying it. Every hour of delay between application and logging degrades the data: quantities get rounded from memory, properties blur together, and the timestamps stop meaning anything.
